<text><p>The I. G. Greer Folksong Collection, presented here as part of the Documenting Appalachia digital initiative, consists of approximately 1,100 document pages that comprise more than 300 individual song titles, some with as many as ten distinct variants. The documents in this collection include manuscripts (some written as early as the mid-19th century), typescript transcriptions produced by Dr. Greer’s secretarial staff, and handwritten musical notations. Songs represented herein range from traditional Child Ballads, traditional English and Scottish ballads as well as their American variants, to 19th century popular music to musical compositions of local origin.</p>
<p>Biographical Note. Isaac Garfield Greer (4 December 1881 - 24 November 1967) was a history and government professor for Appalachian State Teacher's College from 1910 to 1932. A native of Watauga County, North Carolina, he was born to Philip and Mary Greer of Zionville and initially worked as a public school teacher and principal until he was hired at Appalachian State Teacher's College. From 1932 to 1948, he worked as superintendent of Mills Baptist Children's Home in Thomasville, North Carolina. From 1948 to 1954, Greer was the Executive Vice-President of the Business Foundation of North Carolina. Greer and his first wife Willie Spainhour had two sons I.G. Greer, Jr. and Joseph P. Greer. Greer's second wife was Hattie O'Briant. Dr. Greer was an avid collector and singer of folk songs. He was a nationally recognized authority of mountain folk music during his lifetime. A bass player, Greer and his wife, who played the dulcimer, performed at various regional school and civic functions. They were recorded singing several folk songs by Library of Congress from 1941 to 1946. Appalachian State Teacher's College dedicated the I.G. Greer Music Hall in 1966. Greer also had an active civic life. He was the president of the Southern Appalachian Historical Association and also served as a Boone City Alderman and in the North Carolina House of Representatives.</p>
<p>Note: University Libraries Special Collections Research Center (SCRC) believes in providing access to the historical record in support of the teaching, learning, and research endeavors of the communities it serves. Users should be advised that, due to the historical nature of some resources, users may encounter language or content that is harmful or difficult to view.</p></text>

                <text>Faithful John Hanfield

When I was a young man I courted a beauty bride,
On whom I had placed my whole heart’s delight.
I courted her for her love and her love I did obtain,
Because she had no reason of me to complaint.

But when her own parents came for to know
That I was courting of their daughter so
They locked her up and they kept her so severe,
That I never got the sight of my love but once more.

Oh, then I was determined to the window for to go,
To see if my love had forgotten me or not.
But when I came there she said to me and cryed,
“I never will forsake you until they say I die”.

“I am for a man and a man of high degree,
I never will prove false to the man who once loved me,
Although I am in my chambers here confined,
Is that any reason that I should change my mind.

Oh, then I was prepared to the wars for to go
To see whether I could forget my love or not.
But when I was there with my arms a shining bright,
I took another thought of my own hearts delight.

It was seven long years I had served my ring,
Before I was freed to return home again,
But when I returned home I thought of my own love
I had not forgot my sweetheart, oh, no, now never should,

Oh, then I was determined to her father’s house to go
To see if my love had forgot me or not,
But when her mother saw me she rung her hand and cried,
Saying my daughter loved you dearly and for your sake
she died.

Oh, than I was struggling like aman that was slain,
I scarce could be brought to my senses again,
Crying O, O, O, O the pain that I do hear,
My true love is in the grave and I long to be there.

And when I was brought to my senses again
I took pen and ink and wrote down the same
Come all true hearted lovers, come pity, pity me,
Come pity my hearts fortune and my said misery.

I threw myself down all on the green grass,
And lay till my body was layed to the earth,
Now all true hearted lovers that passes thereby
May know that is the place where John Hanfied did die.</text>
