Dear Ms. Beaver:
We received your letter today concerning your request to use two of the photographs from
Pack Memorial Library's Photograph Collection. Please find enclosed (I really am sending it
this time) photograph use agreement. I have also sent you a couple clippings concerning
Katherine Case and the computer descriptions of the two photographs.
I tried calling you today but only got through part of my message before I got cut off. I was
not sure how quickly you needed the photographs and mostly wanted to te ll you that if you
will call Tim Barnwell at 704-251-0040 and tell him what you want, that will activate the
process; we have the negatives pulled and ready for him to pick up. If you have any more
questions concerning Katherine Case, I'd be glad to ask her, or I'm sure she would be glad
to talk with you also. She works here in Technical Services and you could reach her the
easiest on Wednesday or Thursday morning.
Please let me know if there is anything else we can do to help you.
Sincerely,

Zoe Rhine

Leo
'

Friday, August 1, 1997
It was wartime and a young Jewish
man named Leo Finkelstein left his
beloved Asheville home for the
rigors of army life. Neither Leo nor
the U.S. Army would ever be the
same again.
Be with us on Friday, August 1, when
Leo Finkelstein will lighten up our
Oneg Shabbat by sharing from his
new book, Letters From Leo,
published by Appalachian
Consortium.
Leo has been a member of our
congregation longer than anyone.
He has served as our historian in
residence and has a story for every
occasion. Don't miss this
remarkable view of army life as you
hear Leo reading letters written to
the folks back in Asheville from the
deserts of Utah or the foxholes of
the South Pacific.

Leo Finkelstein

Here are some examples of Leo's
humor and insight.
From Kearns, Utah:
The Air Corps is just like our G.l.
Laundry-you get out of It just what
you put into it, but you'd never
recognize it.
From Guadalcanal:
Mosquitoes are big here. One lit in
the runway and they put seventy
gallons of gas in it before they
found out it wasn't a P-38.

Dear Mr. Finkelstein,
I really should start this lett~r with Dear Leo,
since everybody here speaks of •t!our Leo 11 , but I dont
even know, if y ou remember me at all and so I have
to be a bit formal.
Your good friend Sendar, our president, has asked me
to write all our friends who ch~erfully gave donations
during the holiday season.
When IsaakGradman started his speech on Jom Kippur
night by informing us that your letter and check had
ar~ived that very day, he reall~ hit the spot and to
make a long story short, I as well as many others
believe that your generous gift helped ·us greatly not
onlz in reaching our goal of & 2,500.00 but in getting
pl~es for $ 3,000 . 00 .
Thanks for the gift and the lift you gave us. Tbese pledges and the higher dues promised by all
members will help us keep the Schull going in let
us say, the old-fashioned orthodox wey.
We had a good rabbi for the holidays but he did not stay
and we are trying hard to g- t a new one.
e
You know that our prayers ~lway :3 beg for Scholem. I am
sure that these prayers were never said with more conviction than thi s year and it is t~e hope of all that they
may be fulfilled.
Thanks again, in the name of the whole congregation and
with best wi shes for yourself,
