Greer Folksong Collection, presented here as part of the Documenting Appalachia digital initiative, consists of approximately 1,100 document pages that comprise more than 300 individual song titles, some with as many as ten distinct variants. The documents in this collection include manuscripts (some written as early as the mid-19th century), typescript transcriptions produced by Dr. Greer’s secretarial staff, and handwritten musical notations.
Biographical Note. Isaac Garfield Greer (4 December 1881 - 24 November 1967) was a history and government professor for Appalachian State Teacher's College from 1910 to 1932. A native of Watauga County, North Carolina, he was born to Philip and Mary Greer of Zionville and initially worked as a public school teacher and principal until he was hired at Appalachian State Teacher's College. From 1932 to 1948, he worked as superintendent of Mills Baptist Children's Home in Thomasville, North Carolina. From 1948 to 1954, Greer was the Executive Vice-President of the Business Foundation of North Carolina. Greer and his first wife Willie Spainhour had two sons I.G. Greer, Jr. and Joseph P. Greer. Greer's second wife was Hattie O'Briant. Dr. Greer was an avid collector and singer of folk songs. He was a nationally recognized authority of mountain folk music during his lifetime. A bass player, Greer and his wife, who played the dulcimer, performed at various regional school and civic functions. They were recorded singing several folk songs by Library of Congress from 1941 to 1946. Appalachian State Teacher's College dedicated the I.G. Greer Music Hall in 1966. Greer also had an active civic life. He was the president of the Southern Appalachian Historical Association and also served as a Boone City Alderman and in the North Carolina House of Representatives.

Songs represented herein range from traditional Child Ballads, traditional English and Scottish ballads as well as their American variants, to 19th century popular music to musical compositions of local origin.

                  <text>
The I. G. Songs represented herein range from traditional Child Ballads, traditional English and Scottish ballads as well as their American variants, to 19th century popular music to musical compositions of local origin.

                  <text>
The I. G. Songs represented herein range from traditional Child Ballads, traditional English and Scottish ballads as well as their American variants, to 19th century popular music to musical compositions of local origin.

                  <text>
The I. G. Songs represented herein range from traditional Child Ballads, traditional English and Scottish ballads as well as their American variants, to 19th century popular music to musical compositions of local origin.

And shun the fault I fell in;
Henceforth take warning by the fall

Greer Folksong Collection, presented here as part of the Documenting Appalachia digital initiative, consists of approximately 1,100 document pages that comprise more than 300 individual song titles, some with as many as ten distinct variants. The documents in this collection include manuscripts (some written as early as the mid-19th century), typescript transcriptions produced by Dr. Greer’s secretarial staff, and handwritten musical notations. Songs represented herein range from traditional Child Ballads, traditional English and Scottish ballads as well as their American variants, to 19th century popular music to musical compositions of local origin.

                <text>Barbara Allen

In Scarlet town where I was born,
There lived a fair maid dwelling,
Made every youth say "well aware."
Her name was Barb'ra Allen.

All in the merry month of May,
When green buds they were swelling,
Sweet William on his deathbed lay,
For love of Barb'ra Allen.

He sent his man unto her then,
To the town where she was dwelling,
"You must come to my master dear
If your name be Barb'ra Allen."

Then slowly, slowly she came up,
And slowly she came nigh him,
"Oh lovely maid, come pity me,
I'm on my deathbed lying."

"If on your deathbed you do lie,
What needs the tale you're telling?
I cannot keep you from your death,
Farewell," said Barb'ra Allen.

Hard-hearted creature him to slight,
Who loved me so sincerely,
Oh that I had been more kind to him,
When he was alive and near me.

On Monday morning she took sick,
Her heart was struck with sorrow,
Oh, Mother, mother, make my bed,
For I shall die tomorrow.

Farewell, farewell, ye virgins all,
And shun the fault I fell in,
Henceforth take warning by the fall
Of cruel Barb'ra Allen.   </text>

Oh,Lay him low,oh,tay .him low!
That I m~y look upon him;
Oh,that .ltd been naore kind to him!
When he was alive and near me~
Oh,mother,mother!make my bead,
Oh,make it long and narrow!
Sweet Willie died for love to-day,
And I must die from sorrow.
Young Willie wae buried in an old church-yard,
And Barbara buried by him.
There sprang a rose from Willie's trave,
And a briar grew forth from Barbara's.
TheY'· grew,they grew, till they grew no higher,
they reached the old church tower;
lhey gre till they t·.fined in a true loves Jfnot
For all true lovers to admire.

                  <text>
The I. G.
