Person An individual, biographical data, birth and death, etc. Occupation Professor Emeritus Biographical Text Professor Emeritus of Biology Finnis Ray Derrick (May 1, 1911 - ), retired college professor and administrator, was born in Irmo, South Carolina, the son of O.J. Derrick, a farmer in Irmo, South Caro­lina, and Anna Lowman Derrick. Derrick has five brothers and one sister. Derrick is married to Margaret Koon Derrick, and the couple have two children. Their son, Ray L. Derrick, is an attorney in Columbia, South Carolina and has a son, Joey, and a daughter, Ann. Their daughter, Margaret E. Derrick, is an English teacher in Lugoff, South Carolina. Margaret is married to Stephen DeGroat and the couple have one son, Stephen, and a daughter, Kara. Derrick went to Chapin High School and graduated in 1929. In 1934 Derrick graduated from the University of South Carolina in Columbia, South Carolina with a B.S. degree in biology. He received his M.S. degree in biology in 1937, also from the University of South Carolina. His thesis was "A Preliminary Ecological Survey of Liberty Township, Pickens County, South Caro­lina." While working on his M.S., Derrick was a faculty member at Liberty High School in Liberty, South Carolina where he taught science until 1939. In 1939 Derrick went to Greenville Senior High School in Greenville, South Carolina where he taught science until 1941. He then became a faculty member at Richmond Academy in Augusta, Georgia where he taught biology. Derrick served as chairman of the Biol­ogy Department at Augusta Junior College in Augusta, Georgia, from 1943 until 1946. Derrick came to Appalachian State Teachers College (now Appalachian State University) in 1946 as an assistant professor in the Department of Biology. At this time Derrick and Ida Belle Ledbetter (deceased Professor Emerita of Biology) were the only two faculty members in the department. During this period Derrick received further academic training at Auburn University, the University of Virginia and Duke University. Derrick became the first chairman of the Biology Department in 1954 just prior to receiving his Ph.D. from the University of South Carolina in 1955. Under his leadership the department grew from two faculty members to thirteen faculty members. He gave up the chairmanship in 1973 to teach full-time. Derrick's valuable leadership in the department aided greatly in the institution's transi­tion from a teachers college to university in 1967. While at Appalachian, Derrick served on the Advance Placement and Honors Committee, the Curriculum Committee, and the Summer Quarter Council. In 1968 the responsibilities of these three committees were assumed by the University Committee on Academic Policies and Procedures on which Derrick also served. Derrick also served on the University Committee on Per­sonnel for three years. In recognition of his achievements in research and teaching, Derrick was ap­pointed to the Graduate Faculty in 1973. In 1974 he received the Trustees Award for Excellence in Teaching for his contributions to the teaching profession and the university. He is also listed in Who's Who in Education and in American Men of Science. In 1974 Derrick served as a Joint Ap­pointee between the Biology Department and the Department of Secondary Education. In this capacity he served as both a consultant and supervisor of student teachers. As consultant, Derrick helped to set up an outdoor learning area for South Elementary School in Mooresville, North Carolina. He also helped to evaluate the biology curriculum and acted as the liaison between Appalachian State University and Hibriten High School in Caldwell County and West Wilkes High School in connection with the Carnegie Experiment, where high school students re­ceived college credit for biology in conjunc­tion with the Admissions Partnership Pro­gram. He also spent time studying and evalu­ating the biology curriculum at Needham Broughton High School in Raleigh, North Carolina. He served on the Governor's Task Force for setting up curriculum in resource use education for elementary teachers. Derrick was active in the North Caro­lina Education Association, the National Association of Biology Teachers, the North Carolina Academy of Science where he was Director of the District Science Fair, the North Carolina Wildflower Preservation Society, the Conservation Council of North Carolina, and the Human Betterment League of North Carolina. He was also chairman, for North Carolina, of a national conservation project carried on by the American Nature Society and the National Association of Biology Teachers. During his tenure at Appalachian, Derrick received six grants from the National Science Foundation for summer science programs at ASU for high-ability high school students. He also received a grant from the National Science Founda­tion for a summer program for training ele­mentary teachers in resource use education. Derrick's love of the outdoors prompted him to serve as a scoutmaster for the Boy Scouts and as the county chairman of the Forestry Committee for the Northwest North Carolina Development Association. He was also chairman of the Environmental Studies Council and director of the Institute on Environmental Education. Derrick's publications include: "Values of Ecological Surveys to High School Teach­ers," in South Carolina Education, 1938. "A Conservation Project," in Wildlife in North Caro­lina, 1953. "Changes in Trout Fishing in Western North Caro­lina," in Faculty Publications, ASU, 1967. Derrick retired from his position at Ap­palachian State University in 1976 but taught for two more years as Professor Emeritus of Biology. He also taught one section of "Aquaculture" for the biology department during the spring semesters of 1980 and 1981 and one section of "Woods, Trees, and Shrubs" in the Earth Studies Program for three consecutive fall semesters 1981 -83. He was supervising instructor in biology for the Appalachian Partnership Program from 1980-85. He continues to assist with ASU's Continuing Education Program-Wildflower Weekend-each spring. The Derricks are active members of the Boone United Methodist Church where Derrick has served as chairman of the Offi­cial Board, as president of Methodist Men, and as a steward. In his retirement Derrick experiments in farm pond management of fishes, espe­cially in culture of hybrid bream and cage culture of trout and tilapia. He has developed and maintains a wildflower and nature trail, and conducts tours along this trail for garden clubs, schools, senior citizens, or any inter­ested group. Derrick boasts that one can see more species of wildflowers in a one hour walk on this trail than any other place in North Carolina except for a few publicly maintained botanical gardens! Derrick also assists garden clubs in maintaining the Daniel Boone Native Gardens. Additional activities occupying Derrick's busy "retirement" include: helping to organize a local unit of the National Asso­ciation of Retired Persons, and serving as its president for two years; serving on the New River Mental Health Area Board since 1980; and serving on the Boone town planning board since 1981. Person An individual, biographical data, birth and death, etc. Occupation Associate Professor Emerita Biographical Text Associate Professor Emerita of Chemistry May Evans Denton (May 14, 1908 -), retired college professor, was born in Comer, Georgia, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J.D. Evans. She attended Comer High School for two years and then Cordele High School for one year before she graduated in 1924. Den­ton reports that her year at Cordele was most significant; its excellent teachers and near college-level chemistry lab directed her to science, and the superb piano teacher--who coached her to win the D. Holmes gold medal in piano competition in 1926--allowed her to realize her talent in music. From this time forward Denton knew that she was wed for life to music, science, and teaching. Success in those fields at that time gave her self-respect, confidence, and a determination to go to college. Denton, who is now divorced from Sidney Eaves Denton (born 1907), has one daughter, Dorothy Denton Palombo (August 31, 1933 - ) who lives in Highland Park, Illinois. Denton had five brothers and two sisters. Now surviving are: J.R. Evans of Phoenix, Arizona; Thomas Evans Moon of Mt. Dora, Florida; and Wilda Evans of Fresno, California. In 1928 Denton received her B.S. de­gree in chemistry from Georgia State College for Women, Milledgeville, Georgia. After receiving her degree she supervised practice teachers and taught high school science at Peabody High School, a part of Georgia State College for Women, and during the summers she was an instructor of chemistry and phys­ics at the college. Meanwhile, she took sev­eral courses in physics and chemistry at Emory University, and then went on in 1931 to work on her M.S. degree in physical chem­istry at Vanderbilt University. Her masters thesis was, "Spectrographic Methods as Applied to the Determination of the Absorp­tion Curves of Some Organic Compounds." After receiving the M.S. in 1932, Den­ton took the only job she could find during the height of the great depression at the junior high school in Monroe, Georgia where she taught math. During this time Denton mar­ried and gave birth to her daughter in 1933. After a year's leave Denton returned to work in Demorest, Georgia at its elementary school where she taught for four years. Dur­ing summers she taught at Piedmont College, the local small congregational school. Her husband had a drug store in Demorest. In 1940 Denton went to Newberry, South Carolina to join the faculty at New­berry College where she taught biology and women's physical education. While at Newberry College Denton studied piano, organ and voice until she left to teach dramatics and high school science at the high school in Tabor City, North Carolina until 1942. For the next five years Denton did community work, served in the church choir as organist, and was active as a Girl Scout leader and council member in Newberry, South Carolina. In 1947 she took a position in Columbia, South Carolina at University High School of the University of South Caro­lina where she taught science for 10 years and worked with the University of South Carolina supervising student teachers. While there, she became a patron of Town Theater working back-stage at first and later having on-stage roles (as Mrs. Winslow in "The Winslow Boy", and as Monica in "Bad Seed"). During this 10-year period Denton also studied semantics at the University of South Carolina and did some graduate work in modern physics, math and science at Cor­nell University under a Shell Foundation award. She also received a Ford Foundation fellowship to conduct research on "Peace­time Uses of Radioactive Isotopes" at the Institute of Nuclear Studies (Oak Ridge) and Brookhaven National Laboratory Hospital (Upton, New York). In 1957 Denton went to the University of North Carolina to teach physical science on public television until 1961. Her programs emanated from Woman's College in Greens­boro, North Carolina (now the University of North Carolina at Greensboro) for two years until the program was moved to N.C. State in Raleigh for the last two years. Denton came to Appalachian State Teachers College (now Appalachian State University) in 1961 as an associate professor in the Department of Biology, not teaching biology but a course in physical science which was originated for elementary teach­ers and was later transferred to the chemistry department. While at Appalachian, Denton was active in the National Geographic Society, the National Education Association, the American Academy for Advancement of Science, the American Association of Uni­versity Women, and the American Associa­tion of University Professors. Some of Denton's publications are: "Science Teachers at Atomic Centers" in S.C£A. Journal, 1952 (selected portions of which were aired on "Voice of America") "An Hypothesis as to the Cause and Control of Meno­pausal Hot Flashes" in Journal of the Elisha Mitchell Scientific Society, 1963. Denton was active in the Woman's Club-Fine Arts Division for whom she gave an organ recital in 1967. She also sculpted and entered a bust for exhibition and compe­tition at the Mint Museum in 1967. She was also active in St. Elizabeth's Catholic Church where she played organ during Mass. Denton retired from Appalachian in 1973. In 1980 at Highland Park, Illinois, she went back to her ever-beloved music, tack­ling concert piano numbers, Chopin noc­turnes and ballades and presenting them for two public recitals. She also, on a weekly basis, presented a mix of popular and classi­cal piano for a group of stroke patients at an "alternate care" program. Most of all, she enjoys her daughter, executive director of the Northshore Mental Health Association and the Irene Josselyn clinic, and son-in-law, private practitioner and dean of the Institute of Social Work in Chicago, who live near her in Highland Park, Illinois. Person An individual, biographical data, birth and death, etc. Occupation Professor Emeritus Biographical Text Professor Emeritus of Music Walton Smith Cole (June 24, 1921 -), retired college professor, was born at Rosemark, Shelby County, Tennessee to Mary Cassena (Smith) and John Robinson Cole. At the age of 12 he started the study of piano with local teachers. In high school, he studied with Herbert Summerfield in Memphis, Tennessee. He attended the Rosemark Ele­mentary School and Bolton High School at Arlington, Tennessee. Cole graduated from high school in 1939 as valedictorian of the class. He enrolled in college at Southwestern at Memphis (now Rhodes College) where he pursued the Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in music. He was a piano student of Myron S. Myers at the Memphis College of Music (the music department of Southwest-em). Due to the war years, Cole was forced to graduate early on January 23, 1943. Service to his country began for Cole on April 21, 1943. He spent the next thirty-three months as a Link Trainer Instructor in Tucson and Marana, Arizona, as a tail gunner on a B-17, and finally as a hospital chaplain's assistant at Buckley Field, Denver, Colo­rado. In the fall of 1946 he matriculated at the University of Arizona in order to complete the requirements for the Bachelor of Music degree in performance, and in 1950 received the Master of Music degree in performance as a piano student of Julia Rebeil. Having had an intense interest in languages, he won Latin prizes in high school, the French prize at the University in Tucson, and the annual German prize at Southwestern. In addition, he studied the Russian language on a Danforth Summer Grant awarded him in 1961. A call from Dean J.D. Rankin brought him to Appalachian State Teachers College (now Appalachian State University) Boone. N.C. in early February of 1951. While at Appalachian he served as keyboard coordi­nator for 28 years, and taught piano class, piano ensemble, piano pedagogy and litera­ture, theory, counterpoint, form and analysis, and introduction to music. He served on the Faculty Senate, the faculty welfare and mo­rale committee, the departmental personnel committee, the athletic committee, the li­brary self-study committee, and the artist and lecture series committee. He also served as Equal Opportunity Associate and as chair­man of the first fine arts festival committee. He developed the piano pedagogy curricu­lum for Appalachian and served on various other ad hoc committees. Walton Cole was married to the late Mary Alva White Cole in 1953. They had two daughters: Mary Virginia ("Ginger"), born January 20,1958 and Melanie, born Septem­ber 29,1960. Ginger attended the University of North Carolina dental school and served there several years as a dental assistant in pedodontics. She is married to Harold Tho­mas Brewer, formerly of Chapel Hill. They live in Hickory, North Carolina with their daughter, Ashley Cole Brewer, who was born July 18, 1982. Melanie attended the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and has recently completed the Master of Fine Arts degree in metal sculpture at Cornell University where she has a teaching assistant-ship. Professor Cole was a member of the North Carolina Music Teachers Association and served as district certification chairman, district contest-festival chairman, adjudica­tor, local convention chairman, treasurer, First vice-president and president. He was a regular attendee of the state meetings of North Carolina Music Educators Associa­tion. He is a member of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Fraternity and Pi Kappa Lambda Honor­ary Fraternity. Professor Cole retired from Appalachian in 1986 and his retirement plans include gardening, photography, reading, sleeping and attending cultural events when the notion strikes! He mar­ried Mary Lee Lambert Cooper. They have one daughter, Catherine, in medical school at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and one son, Ross, attending Watauga High School in Boone. Cooper earned a B.S. degree in arts and sciences from Clemson College in 1950, and a M.Ed, degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1957. In 1964, he earned an Ed.D. degree from the University of Florida, where he held the Kellogg Fel­lowship for Doctoral Study in Junior College Leadership. In 1950, Cooper began teaching in the South Carolina public school system. While there, he served as a coach and an English, math, and science teacher for the eighth through the twelfth grades. He also served in the Durham county school system as audio­visual director from 1953 to 1958, after which he came to Appalachian State Teach­ers College as an instructor of education and a supervisor of student teaching. While working on his doctorate, Coo­per served at the Central Florida Junior Col­lege in Ocala, Florida, where he was an instructor of English and held the positions of director of Institutional Research and Assis­tant to the President. Cooper remained at Central Florida until 1966, when he went to Polk Junior College in Bartow, Florida. At Polk, Cooper served as Dean of the Evening College and was responsible for the Continu­ing Education Program. In 1967, Cooper came to Appalachian State University where he served in the Department of Leadership and Higher Education as a professor and Director of the Bachelor of Technology Pro­gram. While at Appalachian, he received the Trainers of Teacher Trainers (TTT) Fellow­ship for 1970-1971. Cooper has arranged for several inter­national higher education professionals to visit Appalachian for teaching or consulting. His travels have taken him to Western Eu­rope, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Mexico, the Soviet Union, Japan, and the Philippines. Also, he has lectured in the Peoples Republic of China. In "retirement," Dr. Cooper continues to teach part-time in the Department of Lead­ership and Higher Education, and is serving as editor for the Appalachian Consortium Press. Person An individual, biographical data, birth and death, etc. Occupation Professor Emeritus Biographical Text Professor Emeritus of Biology Irvin Watson (Bill) Carpenter, Jr. (November 29,1923, -), son of Irvin Watson Carpenter, Sr. and Ruth McCord Carpenter, was born in Washington, D.C. After gradu­ation from Western High School in 1941, Carpenter entered Purdue University in Lafeyette, Indiana. In July of 1942 he left Purdue to serve in the U.S. Navy. He served four years on the U.S.S. Wisconsin and dur­ing that time he received six battle stars. He was discharged from active duty in 1946 and joined the Naval Reserves and served as a lieutenant. After his tour of active duty Carpenter returned to Purdue University and received his B.S. degree in forestry in 1948. He also received his M.S. degree (1950) and his Ph.D. degree (1952) in botany from Purdue University. In 1952-53 he was employed by Purdue University as an instructor in forestry. Carpenter is married to Jessie Luella Carpenter (ASU associate professor emerita of speech pathology and audiology) and the couple have three daughters: Kim Jean (August 2, 1956-), Ruth Ann (October 11, 1955- ), and Carol Ernestine (May 23, 1959-). Kim (graduate of Wake Forest Univer­sity, 1974) married W. David Lee, an alum­nus of Western Carolina University and the Wake Forest Law School, on August ll, 1974. The couple have two daughters: Laura Elizabeth Lee, and Kathryn Diane Lee. The Lees live in Monroe, North Carolina. Ruth Ann (graduate of Wake Forest University, 1977) married Matthew R. Bee, (May 27, 1978), who is a stock broker with Merrill Lynch. Ruth is a Financial planner at R.J. Reynolds, and the couple live in Win­ston-Salem, North Carolina. Carol attended North Carolina State University from where she was graduated in 1981. She is now living outside St. Paul, Minnesota, where she is working as a medi­cal secretary. In 1953 ASU President D.D. Dough­erty appointed Dr. Carpenter to the faculty at Appalachian as a biology professor. Dr. Dougherty would surely be proud today if he could know of the tremendous dedication and service Bill Carpenter has provided to Appalachian over the past 33 years. He vol­untarily served as "cameraman" to take films of athletic events for the Mountaineers for 15 years! During most of that time he donated his services without charge. After he was required to accept payment, he donated his pay to the Yosef Club along with enough other funds to make him a member of ASU's most prestigious level of giving--The Chancellor's Committee. Dr. Carpenter has the distinction of having made a gift to the ASU Foundation every year since the foun­dation was formed. Carpenter was co-chair of the Ida Belle Ledbetter Scholarship, and a sponsor of the Chan Gordon Scholarship. Also, for a num­ber of years, Dr. and Mrs. (J. Lou) Carpenter served as sponsors of the ASU Cheerleaders. The list of accomplishments to Carpenter's credit clearly reveals his generous spirit of giving to his alma mater. (participated in several Shrine Bowl games 1960-70); Boone Rotary Club; Boone Lions Club; American Legion; Veterans of Foreign Wars; Moose Lodge of Boone; and the Boone Chamber of Commerce. Due to his keen interest in young people, Carpenter served as a boy scout master troop leader for six years, and a girl scout master troop leader for one year. In 1971 Dr. Carpenter received the Trustees Award for Outstanding Teacher; in 1974 he received the Athletic Department Appreciation Award; and in 1986 he re­ceived the Alumni Outstanding Service Award. During retirement Bill Carpenter will do some botany consulting and he will be the curator and manager of the ASU Herbarium. Person An individual, biographical data, birth and death, etc. Occupation Associate Professor Emeritus Biographical Text Associate Professor Emeritus of Foreign Languages Carl Herbert Bredow (January 23, 1914 -), college professor, was born in Ber­lin, Germany, the son of architect Carl Theodor Bredow and Auguste Bredow (nee Malchow). In 1924, Carl, his sister (Emma "Nicki" Wnorowski) and his parents emigrated to the United States. In 1931, he completed his pre-college program at Manual Training High School in only three and one half years. In the fall of 1931 he started his college education at Columbia University in New York City. Due to the economic vicissitudes of the pre-World War II period, Bredow did not com­plete his degree program until after a number of interruptions. Being unemployed, he spent two years with his parents on a run-down farm in central New York State, often work­ing as a farm-hand for a dollar-and-a-half a day. But, it was healthy outdoor work! Professor Brashear was married to John Hibbs Brashear (1916—April 7,1986), Professor Emeritus from Appalachian State University. Lucy Brashear is the mother of two children, Ann and Jason, and grand­mother of four grandchildren. In 1937, he was accepted as a partici­pant in the "Junior Year in Munich" program of the University of Maryland. He completed this program successfully, but stayed on for another two years, living with his parents in their apartment in Berlin. He was briefly employed by the Berlin office of the Chicago Tribune, but gave this up after a run-in with the SS. He signed up for courses at Berlin University, but discontinued this effort when the course content proved to be too heavily distorted by Nazi ideology. In November 1938 Bredow experienced the aftermath of the infamous Crystal Night, during which synagogues were looted and burned and the store windows and display cases of Jewish shops all over Germany were smashed over­night. These events and observations, as well as the scanning of the international press, convinced Bredow, a naturalized American citizen since 1935, to finally leave his native country. In 1939 Carl Bredow and his sister stepped off the German flag-flying ocean-liner in New York City, each with ten Ameri­can dollars in pocket. A new start, indeed! Bredow found a job installing radios and heaters in automobiles. In 1941 he was inducted into the army and, due to his most recent experience, was assigned to the com­munications unit of an infantry headquarters company, where he served until receiving a medical discharge because of a back injury. Out of the army, Bredow serviced movie projectors and worked as a materials inspector in war plants. When the war was over and times were better, he entered Co­lumbia University and earned a B.S. degree from the School of General Studies--here he met fellow student Jane Vogedes, whom he married in 1946. Bredow received the M. A. from Teachers College in 1948 in the teaching of foreign languages. While in school, he taught Eng­lish to foreigners (now generally referred to as the ESL program) at Columbia University. Bredow taught French and Spanish at the Plainfield, New Jersey, high school from 1950 until 1952, when, at the height of the Korean War inflation, he left teaching to take a better-paying position in quality control with the Weston Electrical Instrument Com­pany. Through corporate mergers, Bredow's job eventually ceased to exist, and in 1962 he returned to the teaching profession, this time at the New Brunswick, New Jersey, high school. In 1963 he was accepted into the National Defense Education Act (NDEA) German Institute at Princeton University, allowing him to update his command of the German language and culture. Receiving an appointment as assistant professor of languages at Appalachian State Teachers College (now Appalachian State University) in 1964, Carl moved his wife and children to Boone. In addition to teaching French and German, Bredow also served as director of the language lab and as instructor in the NDEA Institutes in French. In 1971, Bredow became associate professor in the Department of Foreign Languages. Listen­ing to international short-wave radio pro­grams, a hobby during his tenure at Appala­chian, won him a 10-day, all- expenses-paid trip to Germany. In 1979 Mr. Bredow retired after Fifteen distinguished years of service to Appalachian State University. Once retired, Bredow moved the fam­ily to Charlotte, North Carolina, a logical choice of residence for a man not ready to retire to a rocking chair and T.V.! There he has worked as technical translator, as inter­preter, as tutor, and as teacher of German at East Mecklenburg High School. He enjoys great satisfaction from this and from his volunteer work in the Faraday Lab at Discov­ery Place. He has also been very active in, and has served as director of adult education, at the Unitarian Church of Charlotte. His wife, Jane, enjoys the well-bal­anced climate of Charlotte (it eases the limi­tations from osteoporosis) and is active in community services such as Crisis Ministry and income tax counseling at Sheperd's Center. She is also compiling a cookbook. They both spend a great deal of time keeping up with their four children and four grandchildren, who are: Peggy, who is the wife of Richard A. Linke, who have daugh­ters Rebecca, 7, and Megan, 3, and who live in Holmdel, New Jersey; Carl F., who is married to Gayle (née Newgent), who are the parents of Joseph, 3, and Vicki, 8 months, and who live in Charlotte, N.C.; Maryjane Far­thing, who is Manager: Quality Control at TRW, Boone, and who is presently unmar­ried; and Anne (Mrs. Tony F.) Lucy Moore Brashear was born in Bellevue, Ohio, in 1922, where she was graduated from Bellevue Central High School in 1940. After attending Tiffin Uni­versity for two years, she served as a WAVE in the United States Navy in naval intelli­gence and was honorably discharged in November 1945. After her service years she studied English at the University of Florida, where she was elected to Phi Beta Kappa and Phi Kappa Phi, honorary scholastic societies. Professor Brashear earned the B.A. degree in English with High Honors in 1949 and the M.A. degree two years later. In 1969 she received the Ph.D. degree from the Univer­sity of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Be­tween degrees she taught at Elon College, Guilford College and UNC-G on a part-time basis, and full time at Bennett College in 1966. The following year Professor Brashear accepted a position in the English Depart­ment at Appalachian State University where she remained until retirement as Professor Emerita June 1985. She is currently a member of several scholarly organizations, including Modem Language Association, South Atlantic Modern Language Association, Philological Society of the Carolinas, Shakespeare Soci­ety of America, Southeastern Renaissance Conference, and National Women's Studies Association. She was elected as a delegate to the Modem Language Association for a three-year term and appointed for a term to the Nominating Committee of the Southeastern Renaissance Conference. During her tenure at Appalachian Pro­fessor Brashear participated in the English Department honors program, the University Faculty Grievance Committee, and the Admissions Committee. In 1981 she received an off-campus scholarly assignment to pursue research re­lating to the poets Katherine Phillips, Anne Finch, and Elizabeth Cary. Person An individual, biographical data, birth and death, etc. Occupation Professor Emerita Biographical Text Professor Emerita of Elementary Education Beulah Catherine Campbell (May 7, 1916 -), retired college professor, was born in Campbellsville, Kentucky, the daughter of Bertha Durham Campbell and Abraham Harding Campbell. She has two brothers, Omer Harding Campbell and Samuel Wray Campbell. Her grandparents were Samuel and Kizzie Harding Campbell and Samuel and Mary Catherine Durham. She began college in 1935 at Campbellsville College and in 1937 she transferred to Western Kentucky State Uni­versity and received an A.B. degree in ele­mentary education in 1941. Meanwhile she taught for six years in a one-room school in Taylor County, Kentucky. She completed her M.A. degree in elementary education in 1944 at Western Kentucky State University. While doing her graduate work, Ms. Campbell taught fifth graders in the public school in Clinton, Tennessee. In 1943, Campbell began work with the Appalachian State Teachers College's Dem­onstration School teaching third grade. She also taught college classes in elementary education in the summer school at the college from 1945-46. In 1947, Campbell became an assistant professor of elementary education at Westminister College in New Wilming­ton, Pennsylvania where she served until 1957. During this time, she did additional graduate work in children's literature and reading at Colorado State College in Greeley, Colorado for one summer and at George Peabody College in Nashville, Tennessee for another summer. In 1954-55 she attended Teachers College of Columbia University in New York City where she studied children's literature and teacher education. During this year she also she supervised first-year teach­ers at East Orange, New Jersey. In 1957 Beulah Campbell began her career at Appalachian State University in North Carolina. While serving as a professor in the College of Learning and Human De­velopment, she gained national recognition conducting children's literature conferences, festivals, and workshops for teachers and librarians. She also hosted study tours in the United States, British Isles and Scandinavia, where students met authors and illustrators of award winning children's books. Campbell had a book dedicated to her in 1964. The book, Pocketful of Cricket, was written by Rebecca Caudill and illustrated by Evelyn Ness. She was included as one of the characters (Miss Aberdeen, an elementary school teacher) in the book Katie Kittenheart by Miriam Mason. Campbell was awarded grants from the Department of Education in Washington, D.C. to conduct an institute in children's literature ($54,000, in 1965) and an institute in black literature for children ($20,000, in 1970) which was rated as one of the top ten institutes in the nation in 1970. In a trip sponsored by the Ford Venture Program, Campbell went in 1974 to England to visit eight British illustrators who had won that country's Kate Greenaway Award. She purchased illustrations from the award-win­ning books of these artists for the collection at Appalachian. Campbell also received the Trustee's award for outstanding teaching at Appala­chian. In light of her many accomplishments and national renown, she was promoted to full professor in 1978, and in 1981 she was granted emerita status. Although she retired from teaching on June 11, 1981, Campbell continued to serve Appalachian for two years in 1981-82 by collecting the original art work from children's books and preparing it for exhibit. And those pieces which she has collected for herself, since retirement, will be placed in the Appalachian museum as well. Beulah Campbell reports that retire­ment is "like one big vacation." She is in­volved in various groups at the Campbellsville Cumberland Presbyterian Church, the Campbellsville Women's Club, the Campbellsville College Alumni Associa­tion, and the Taylor County Library. She enjoys spending much time reading, garden­ing, visiting friends and relatives, and travel­ing her beautiful home state of Kentucky. Person An individual, biographical data, birth and death, etc. Occupation Professor Emeritus Biographical Text Professor Emeritus of Health, Physical Education and Recreation James Andrew Brakefield (October 23, 1918 -), college professor and baseball and football coach, was born in Quinton, Ala­bama, the seventh of eight children of the late Andrew Jackson Brakefield and Annie Sanes Brakefield. Brakefield's father, "Jack," was a foreman in a coal mine most of his life but during his later years he leased and operated a truck mine. He grew up in Warrior, Ala­bama, and Annie Brakefield spent her early years in Columbus, Georgia. James Brakefield spent his early gram­mar school years in Harlan County, Ken­tucky; his next four years in Beckley, West Virginia; his first two years in high school in Birmingham, Alabama, and then returned to Harlan County for his last two years of high school. In high school he played football and basketball for four years, was all-conference and captain of the football team his senior year, and was graduated from Evarts High School (Harlan County), in 1937. James worked in the coal mines every summer through high school and college, primarily for his father. After loading coal on his knees all one summer in a wet coal shaft, he decided there should be an easier way to make a living. Later, after graduating from college, he never walked into another mine shaft. "Jim" Brakefield attended Centre Col­lege of Danville, Kentucky, on a football scholarship and majored in mathematics and minored in English and Spanish. He played all three years of varsity football, was all-state his junior and senior years, and captain his senior year. Brakefield earned his A.B. degree in 1941, and later his M.A. degree in physical education from William and Mary College, Virginia, in 1950. In 1939 many young men were being drafted for the war effort but the government was allowing all persons in college to gradu­ate, so Jim knew that he would join as soon as he completed his studies. In the spring of his senior year a naval officer visited the Centre College campus recruiting naval pilots. Jim's previous flight experience had consisted of a short tour over the town for some eight min­utes in a Ford tri-motor plane which he had not especially enjoyed. Be that as it may, the officer left town three hours later after having Jim sign up for the officer training program of the Naval Air Corps. He reported for active duty to the Air Station at St. Louis, Missouri, on July 15, 1941 as an aviation cadet. One month later he was sent to Corpus Christi, Texas, where he completed his flight training and was commissioned an Ensign on March 25, 1942. Jim Brakefield's training was primar­ily in carrier-type aircraft and he was as­signed to a dive-bomber squadron on an aircraft carrier. Later, the Navy did away with all dive-bomber squadrons and he was assigned as a pilot to a torpedo squadron. His first combat stint was in the South Pacific where he served first on the aircraft carrier Suwanee (a converted tanker), and his sec­ond tour of duty was served on the Wasp (the largest class carrier in the U.S. fleet). Jim was involved in operations at Guadalcanal, Bouganville, Iwo Jima, Philippines, and the main­land of Japan. He flew 48 combat missions and was decorated with two air medals and two Distinguished Flying Crosses. After the end of World War II, Jim was honorably discharged on October 15, 1945, and re­turned to his home at Evarts, Kentucky. On July 10, 1944, James Brakefield married Eloise Wallace (March 12, 1922— August 27,1979). Their only child is Brenda Jean Brakefield (January 7, 1946 - ), who married Thomas Lynn Culbreth on Decem­ber 24, 1964. Thomas and Brenda Culbreth have one daughter, Lisa Lynn Culbreth (August 26, 1966 -). Jim Brakefield taught mathematics and served as head coach of football, baseball, and basketball at Evarts High School from 1946-49. His football team was undefeated and untied his last year there. Later, while a graduate student at William and Mary Col­lege, Brakefield served as a graduate assis­tant for the freshman football team which played six games and was not scored on. Also while at William and Mary College, Jim joined the Naval Air Reserve Program and flew from Norfolk Naval Air Station, Vir­ginia. He was commanding officer of an attack squadron which won the "Noel Davis Trophy," an honor that is bestowed on the best squadron in its class in the Naval Air Reserve Program. From 1950-53 Jim Brakefield served Emory and Henry College, Virginia, where he taught physical education, health education, was the intramural director, was an assistant football and basketball coach, and head baseball coach. The football team lost a total of three games during this period and the baseball team won eighty-five percent of its games. In the fall of 1953 Coach Jim Brake-field went to Wofford College in Spar­tanburg, South Carolina, as assistant profes­sor of health education, assistant football coach, and head baseball coach. While there he joined the Naval Air Reserve Flight Train­ing Program in Atlanta, Georgia, in 1954. He became squadron commander and again won the "Noel Davis Trophy" for attack squad­rons. He retired from the Naval Reserve Program in 1968 with the rank of captain. At Wofford College, Coach Brakefield won seventy percent of his baseball games, and won sixty-five percent of the football games as assistant coach. As head football coach there during 1967-71, his teams posted a 28-16 record. He won 20 consecutive games and finally lost in the National Asso­ciation of Intercollegiate Athletics' champi­onship game to Texas A & I. He was voted South Carolina college coach of the year in 1969 and 1970, and was voted District III college coach of the year in 1970. Coach James Brakefield came to Appa­lachian State University in 1971 as Associate Professor of Health, Physical Education and Recreation, and as Head Football Coach. During his tenure at the University, the schedule was upgraded from playing a Carolinas Conference schedule to playing a Southern Conference schedule with two strong non-conference schools each year. His overall record at Appalachian was 49-50, with his best season being 1975 when the Apps went 8-3 and defeated Wake Forest University and the University of South Caro­lina. He retired as head football coach at the end of the 1979 season but continued to teach 9 hours and act as an advisor to the Chancel­lor on athletics. At the December 1979 meet­ing of the Appalachian Board of Trustees, the following resolution was passed unani­mously and placed in the permanent records of the University: WHEREAS, James A. Brakefield has served Appalachian State University with dis­tinction as Head Football Coach and member of the faculty; and WHEREAS, he has always been a man of firm conviction with the courage to stand for the right; and WHEREAS, he has uncommon wisdom linked with exceptional judgment; and WHEREAS, he is a man of dignity, integrity, and loyalty; BE IT, THEREFORE, RESOLVED that we, the Board of Trustees of Appalachian State University commend and thank him for his service and publicly express our pleasure in the knowledge that he will remain on the faculty of Appalachian State University. Coach Brakefield was inducted into the Emory and Henry College Athletic Hall of Fame in 1980, and the Wofford College Athletic Hall of Fame in 1982. James Andrew Brakefield retired from Appalachian State University on June 30, 1984. In retirement he is perfecting his golf game, traveling, and visiting with his former colleagues and players. Herbert Louis Bowkley (July 9, 1921—) retired Professor of Chemistry, was born in Pittston, Pennsylvania to Raymond E. Bowkley (deceased), an Attorney at Law, born in Pittston, Penn.; mother, Louise Lewis Bowkley (deceased), a Registered Nurse and homemaker from Lower Island Cove, New­foundland, Canada. Bowkley attended High Bridge High School in High Bridge, New Jersey, and was graduated in 1938. He attended Missouri School of Mines, Rolla, Missouri, 1946-47; University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, 1947-50, B.S. in chemistry; Missouri School of Mines, Rolla, 1950-57, M.S. in chemistry; Pennsylvania State University, University Park, Pennsylvania, 1952-55, Ph.D., major in inorganic chemistry. Bowkley served in the U.S. Army dur­ing World War II, enlisting in February 1942. He served in the infantry and armored force from February 1942 until January 1943, at­taining the rank of Technician 5th grade. He graduated from Engineer Officer Candidate School and served in the Corps of Engineers, seeing service in the South Pacific in 1942 and 1943. He attended Engineer Field Offi­cers School in 1946. He was separated from service in 1946 and remained in the Officer Reserve Corps until retirement with the rank of Captain after more than 19 years of serv­ice, active and reserve. Dr. Bowkley was married to Betty A. Morrow (d. 1985). They have one son, Ray­mond E., and two daughters, Andrea L. Eykyn and Susan M. Greene. Dr. Bowkley was employed during the summer of 1967 and 1968 as a Senior Research Chemist at the U.S. Army Munitions Laboratory, Picatomy Arsenal, Dover, New Jersey. Dr. Bowkley began his career as professor of chemistry at Appalachian State University in 1965, a post which he held until retirement in 1986. While at Appalachian he was active in the Faculty Senate serving three terms from its inception. He served one semester as a faculty intern in the Office of Academic Affairs, and he spent one-half year in China on the China Exchange Program in 1985. Dr. Bowkley obtained several patents on commercial high explosives and fertilizer compositions. He was a member of Sigma Xi (honorary science society), Phi Lambda Upsilon (honorary chemistry society), Sigma Pi Sigma (honorary physics society), Alpha Chi Sigma (chemistry fraternity), American Forestry Association, American Institute of Chemists, and the Federation of Societies for Coatings Technology. Dr. Bowkley's hobbies and special interests include: fishing and camping activi­ties; stamp and mineral collecting; reading about the Civil War, World War I, American Indian history; and nature and conservation activities. W. Williams, founder of Mountain Park Institute, and Bessie Pfaff Williams, of Winston-Salem, North Carolina. She earned both her B.S. in English and French (1938), and her M.A. in English (1953), from Appa­lachian State University. Additionally, Eggers did post-graduate study in Modem British Literature in England at the Univer­sity of London in 1964 (on a Danforth Foun­dation Scholarship), Oxford University in 1971, Cambridge University in 1972, and again, at the University of London in 1973. Also, she received a Certificate of Member­ship at the Yeats Summer School in Sligo, Ireland, in 1968. While an undergraduate student at Appalachian State University, Daisy Eggers was an outstanding scholar and very active in student organizations such as: president of the Y.W.C.A., president of the Dynician Literary Society, member of the Interna­tional Relations Club, Playcrafters, College Chorus, Le Cercle Francais, and, during her senior year, was elected May Queen by the student body. Additionally, she won First Honors in Oratory in the South Atlantic Forensic Tournament. During this time she also served as part-time secretary to the Dean of the College, Dr. J.D. Rankin. After gradu­ation she then worked full-time for Dr. Rankin for three years. As a graduate student, Eggers was so outstanding that Dr. Cratis Williams, Dean of the Graduate School at Appalachian State University, was moved to state later that: "I have never had a better graduate student. She was always exceptionally well prepared and came as close to the ideal in preparing' leads' for seminars, organizing her material for presentation within the time allocated, and engaging meaningfully in dialogue follow­ing her presentation as I have ever seen both at Appalachian and in seminars 1 attended myself while in graduate school. Her seminar papers were of excellent quality and her writing was seasoned and impeccable in its structure. She made A's in all of her graduate courses here and received top grades and honors citations for overseas study. She is a well-read, perceptive, and articulate scholar." Daisy Williams married Graydon Poe Eggers (October 13, 1903 -) on December 22,1938. Graydon Eggers is the son of John F. and Maude Bailiff Eggers. They have two sons and three grandchildren: John Landrine and Vivian Bullock Eggers and granddaugh­ter, Lisa Daimar; and, Graydon Poe, Jr. and Carolyn Anderson Eggers and granddaugh­ter, Marci Carol, and grandson Graydon Andrew (See Graydon Poe Eggers). Daisy Eggers joined the English fac­ulty at Appalachian State University in 1954. From 1970-79 she taught Modern British Studies in the English Honors Program. Upon her resignation from the program and retirement from the University, the director of the program, Dr. Hans G. Heymann wrote: "In all these years you have been a shining example of a competent and dedicated teacher, exemplifying a deep sense of duty, dedication to your students and your profes­sion, and a never-ending desire to deepen and enlarge your knowledge in your field of specialization. Your honors seminars on Yeats and later on Yeats and the Celtic Ren­aissance will be remembered by many of our finest students you taught in our honors pro­gram." Representative of Eggers' papers, ad­dresses, and publications are the following: "W.B. Yeats: A Forgiveness of Opposite*," a seminar paper presented orally at Oxford University in 1971 and later printed by Verve magazine. Honors Day Address. Appalachian State University, Spring 1974. "Echoes of T.S. Eliot in Beckett's Happy Days." a seminar paper written at the University of London and later requested as an oral presentation at the Carolina* Symposium on British Studies in 197S. at Appala­chian State University. Academic Adventure. 1976, published with Ford Foundation funds and shared with colleges and universities across the nation. "History of the First Baptist Church of Boone. 1969-81." From 1974 to 1979 Eggers served as coordinator of the Experimental Cooperative Program between Warren Wilson College and Appalachian State University which was supported by the Ford Foundation. Under her leadership the program was so successful that in 1979 the editors of the Chronicle of Higher Education lauded the project as an outstanding educational venture. During her twenty-eight year service to Appalachian State University. Eggers, in addition to her teaching responsibilities, served on dozens of committees and spon­sored many organizations and activities. One year she was secretary and acting president of the Alumni Association. This long-term dedication was noted when in 1962 the year­book staff dedicated the Rhododendron to her and her husband: To a man and woman who represented to many the epitome of service and understanding in their professional lives and whom the stu­dents of Appalachian respect and admire, we of the 1962 Rhododendron staff and the students we represent proudly dedicate our publication to Dr. and Mrs. Graydon P. Eggers. Also, in 1982, a Chancellor's Scholarship--a continuous Honors Program Scholarship--was named for Professor Eggers. Later, in 1983, Daisy Eggers received the "Outstanding Service Award" from the Appalachian State University Alumni Asso­ciation for her contributions. Community service has played a large and important part in the life of Daisy Eggers. She has served as president of the Boone Women's Club and, most importantly, served as the organist of the First Baptist Church for thirty-three years. She was also the part-time choir director for some time, Sunday school teacher, and church historian, 1980-84. In retirement, Daisy Eggers resides in Boone, North Carolina, with her husband and now has the time to continue with her com­munity activities, her bridge playing, and visiting with her children and grandchildren. Founded in 1922 by Mrs. A. P. Kephart as a summer camp for girls, Camp Yonahlossee was the female counterpart to Camp Yonahnoka located nearby in Linville, North Carolina. In 1954 the camp was sold to Mr. and Mrs. George M. McCord and Mrs. Agnes Jeter. The camp's primary focus was outdoor recreation with programs including horseback riding, archery, rifle shooting, swimming, sailing, and fencing. Crafts and dance were also taught at the camp.
