<text>Sontheim,19 June 1939
My dears! [Max Stein]
Today I would like once more to give myself the pleasure to converse with you a bit. As I hear from
Ernst, who has written a few lines several times, you are blessed with a lovely little son, God be thanked,
and are well yourselves. I pray every day to God that it may always remain this way with you. It was a
great I.oy for me to see the dear little Bertha; small children have always been my passion. Your dear
mother, Clare, also every so often gives herself the pleasure to see her dear little granddaughter. Are
your dear parents OK? Hopefully yes, do you have... Emil with you? ln a huge city like New York it is not
so easy to be satisfied, right? Erna... also visited us a few weeks ago; she likes it at Lif}bergers
(Lissberger). When I asked her if ``things" have come along far enough for Thekla (this could mean a
pregnancy) and the '`Sorgengotterle" [the writer], as Emil called me years ago and still does, comes into
the family; in this regard to you dear Max.
Cousin Martha in Bruchtal has, as you know, a son Otto with ...[cannot read name]; he worked
now almost 2 years in New York in a store with relatives of his deceased father where he also lived.
Martha wrote recently that he is now working in a clothing factory's office,I don't know how many
kilometers outside of New York because I sent Martha's letter on to Thekla, was very ill with grip and
high fever, but he is now much better thanks be to God... he wrote at the beginning of his being-there
that you, d[ear] Max have such a pretty and smart wife and Eugen wrote to Martha what a pretty
[bilderbuch hubsch] child [girl)]you have. Doesn't Martha also have a daughter at the age of 15, like
Thekla's llse, and in August of this year she will go to England as an infant nurse. With the help of his
relatives there he was able to raise $500 as guarantee for his sister; now I thought that I will write to you
one day if you d[ear] Max would not talk to your uncle Max and your aunt Mine, who are both good
examples ,... do something for Thekla's daughter. Your blessed father d[ear] Max at the time also did a
great deal for his siblings, I know this for sure, jn that he helped aunt Mine with money and ... toward
her journey to New York when the butcher shop they had in Wurzburg was not doing too well. And
uncle Max also did not suffer [as a consequence], therefore it would only be reciprocity/duty
[Schuldigkeit] if the two of them were to do something for Thekla's daughter and then she could maybe
take up the same profession as Martha's daughter. When the guarantee is to be put up and you d[ear]
Max might not be able to gather it in full, maybe Emil, who lives with your aunt, could do it, if you were
to put in into his heart. Thekla could then move to Emma. I have no more orders,I would love to do it as
the `'Sorgengotterle" in the family and I would also love to help Thekla's daughter... Your blessed father
is unfortunately dead, he wanted to visit me, but sadly, sadly he not carry this out.
I am doing OK health-wise, but the years after 82 are not my 18 any more; and now I will end my
long letter with the most heartfelt greetings for you, dear Clare, you dear Max and a kiss for my dear
great-grandchild... In America one does not ask for such wide-ranging letters, but I am still in the old
style and have my heart on my...
I would be most happy if you would let me have an answer, in this hope I remain your
You loving aunt Geda
[Greetings for other family members.]</text>

My dear children Emilje and Maier
We received your dear letter, dear Emilje, in which you tell us that your wedding will take place on May
9th [and] to which my clears I give you my fatherly blessing; in addition the dear Lord may send you for
this life everything good and designate his blessing so that we may embrace each other again with God's
help. It is for us parents difficult not to be present personally (but] one has to accept the will of God and
think that God wanted it this way. Therefore be happy and drink a... glass and think of your parents. We
too on this day will hold a small dinner and will also drink a glass to your wellbeing. Have a good time on
your trip and let us hear from you soon.
I end therefore with a greeting and kiss, your papa.
My dearly loved Emilie and dear Ettie
Happily I take the pen... to add my motherly blessings for your marriage even as far as the children are
away... it hurts the mother's heart when I cannot put my hands on your head, but the All-knowing
[allgeistige] will see our love and spread luck and blessings on all of your ways. It is of course very hard
for parents not to be present at such festivities,I am however confident that our dear Sam and dear
Luther will take our place ...

Side 2
[difficult to read the next page] ...priestly blessings, and congratulate you on more time and wish you
a pleasant journey.

Dear Emilie,
I would like to ask you to let us know what deem appropriate as a wedding present. We have the

Dear sister and d[ear] brother-in-law!
I was very happy about your dear letter, dear Emilie, especially since you all are thank the Lord
reasonably well, which I can also say about all of us. You will have seen from my most recent letter that I

Dear Mini, in addition, d[ear] Joseph

On the 18th of this month we received your valued letter, d[ear] Mini where [in which] you announced to
us, that on Sunday, the 26th, will be celebrated your engagement to which I send you and your d[ear]
treasure once more good wishes. The dear Lord will give his blessing to it so that we will see each other
again in good health; now be really happy and cheerful, and on that day I [and] dear Mama will
celebrate and think [dankenrdenken] of you and all of our relatives. How pleasant it would have been
for us parents to be present at this celebration, but we have to comfort [ourselves] and think that is
better to be heard well than to be seen all too quickly.
Dear Joseph,I answered your letter already on the 13th of December, I think that you received that one;
also wrote to your brother, but have not received an answer from him.
Dear Mini on this day I would like to see you as alla...when you arrive [?]. To all of our relatives where
[who] are part of the festivities I say once more enj.oy yourselves on this day [and] I send therefore my
heartfelt greetings to d[ear] Savas [?] and d[ear] Bertha and dear grandchildren, d[ear] Edie and d[ear]
Emilj.e and now comes the best, d[ear] Moritz, you should have received the three letters from us.
Greeting to my father, Leopold Grof; 1st

From Mother, his wife:

My dear bride and dear groom [this must be Luther and Elise].

Through your precise announcement, dear Minie, that your engagement will be pronounced,I want to
give you from far away [weiter Ferne! !] my motherly blessing. Because it did not work out to be part of
this festivity, I am completely happy to hear from of our loved ones that you two are very happy, that is
only the wish of parents. Our stallwarteratter d[ear] Sam und dear Bertha, also our dear Moritz, in
addition to sister Emilie and dear Etti, in spirit we are also with you. By the time the letter reaches you,
the festivities are over; we celebrate you [hochleben] on this day and ... only too bad that d(ear) Julius is
so far away, he was here by Warterburg; Julius only sent a card in which he indicated that so much work
this far away was good for him. And my dear little boy Moritz, as d[ear] Minie wrote us, you will have to
stay a bit longer which with ours clears, which we like very much because when one has such a dear
sister-and brother-in-law it is more pleasant to stay with them than strangers (fremden Leuten); our
dear little grandsons surely will have enjoyed himself well. Luther will again have been successful with
his business [gute Geschafte gemacht haben]? And d[ear] Mildant... was dressed well, was Elise there
because Jutta [?] wrote that she visited you this day. Greetings to Elife [Elise]; now give your d[ear] Sam
and d[ear) Luther our deepest thanks for all the love and goodness [Liebe und Gute] because I know that
you as a father and mother ... I need to close for today (because) I labored so much and see a picture of
... and Kula and heartfelt greetings ... to you, with many hundred kisses and greetings to d[ear] Luther and Elise.

Dear sister-in-law and d[ear] brother-in-law!
When these lines reach you, your wedding will already be over and send you my deepest
congratulations to your marriage. It is now almost a year that we know one another (even if only by
letter). This is now the 3rd festivity this year, so we continue to have joyful reasons to write. You, d[ear]
Minni, complain about my writing laziness,I will make up this mistake [Fehler] and report to you about
home and business; what one writes is not taken in as easily when does not know one another well; one
would like to know much, but not everything can be brought to paper. A few weeks ago I wrote in
considerable detail and that letter surely arrived and found you all in the best of health. It is the ... to be
able to report to one another and so we receive every so often news from K6nigsheim, just as much as
[we do] from d[ear] relatives; my d[ear] mother was unfortunately not well during this whole summer
and has trouble and in addition has visited us since our wedding; before then she had also visited here
several times [and] in the following summer we anticipate receiving more visitors [and]

Side 2
also think of greeting you here in Germany and hopefully will please you in our happiness; even if it is
simple [einfach], we are God be praised [G.L.] happy and satisfied in our home. The business requires
lots of work and effort, but we are glad to work even if we continue to be fortunate and the business
expands further. D[ear] Julius is often in the branch; [he] also frequently [6fters] has to travel on
business in order to make himself known to the customers. Now we are ... and in 14 days our d(ear)
sister will travel to the Modell-Convention in Frankfurt; during your wedding days d[ear] Julius will be
with [our] d[ear] parents in K6nigsheim in order to celebrate the day with them.
please say hello to all the d[ear] relatives ... and write soon on your turn about which is always
grateful
Your
You loving sister-in-law Ida

[Julius added:I
Dear sister and brother-in-law!
I have been most [herzlich] happy with your d[ear] lines, especially to know you healthy. D[ear] brotherin-
law,I was also immediately delighted with your d(ear) lines, especially the beginning of your correspondence in which you said that you hope that we all remain healthy and get to know each other
soon in person. For your wedding I send you the most heartfelt wishes. The d[ear] Lord bless your union
and give you everything according [to your] wishes. I intend to go to K6nigsheim ... to celebrate the
wedding with our d[ear] parents. I hope to receive soon detailed letters from you once more. Say hello
to all the siblings. I remain your
You loving brother and brother-in-law
